SACRED HEART
ACADEMY
Guest Book - Messages
NEW ORLEANS - Rev. Francis James Coco, S.J., a member of the Jesuits of the New Orleans Province, died early in the morning of Sept. 7, 2006 at the age of 85. Fr. Coco was born Oct. 8, 1920 in Helena and graduated from Sacred Heart Academy. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1938 and was ordained at St. Mary's Kansas, on June 14, 1951.
Soon after his ordination he began a lengthy career teaching at Jesuit High School in New Orleans from 1954-1970. For the remaining 36 years of his life, he worked in the retreat ministry, serving as many of the retreat houses for the Jesuits of the New Orleans Province - Manresa House of Retreats in Convent, La., Montserrat Retreat house in Lake Dallas, Texas and Our Lady of the Oaks in Grand Coteau, La.
Music was a special part of his ministry. Known as "the Jazz Priest," each of his retreats concluded with solo clarinet tunes with songs like "A Closer Walk with Thee" and "Amazing Grace" as well as some jazz standards. He sat in with such jazz notables as Pete Fountain, Al Hirt, Ronnie Kole, and other New Orleans jazz bands.
He is survived by his sisters, Sarah Coco and Sister Rita Maria, SCN; and by his brother, Brother Anthony Coco, S.J.
Both of his parents, Joan St. Columbia Coco and Rosario Coco preceded him in death.
Visitation was at Holy Spirit church, 6201 Stratford Place, New Orleans, La. on Monday, Sept. 11, 2006 followed by a wake service.
Visitation also was held at the Immaculate Conception Church, 130 Baronne Street, New Orleans, La., on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2006 followed by the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial was at the Jesuit Cemetery in Grand Coteau, La.
Letters of condolence may be sent to Ms. Sara Coco, 722 Liberty St., Helena, AR 72342, Sister Rita Maria Coco, SCN, Nazareth Home, 2000 Newburg, Rd., Louisville, Ky. 40205 or Brother Anthony Coco, S.J., Ignatius residence, 6321 Stratford Place, New Orleans, La. 70131.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jesuit Seminary Fund, The Jesuits, 710 Baronne St., Suite B, New Orleans, La., 70113.
Arrangements were by Jacob Schoen and Son Funeral home.
Pat, of all the
fine graduates of Sacred Heart, Frank Coco was right at the top of the
list. He graduated the same year that I was born. A couple of years
ago, he played at a fund raiser for St. Louis U. here. He was well known
in St. Louis, both for his music and the many retreats that he held at the
White House here. He participated in Father Tommy Clancy's first mass at St.
Mary's. I drove a car load of Nuns to Little Rock for Father Clancy's ordination.
Last year, the class of '54 had a reunion in Hot Springs and went to the
Cathedral in Little Rock. It was a lot smaller than I remembered.
There will be a big void at our next reunion.
God Bless,
Jimmy East

Can anyone tell me who the SHA orchestra members were, and what instruments they played, in the 1944-1946 time frame? I just want to recall some of the rewarding experiences we had then. It would be fun to hear from any of them, or anyone else who wants to engage in some reminiscing.

MD5K Clay County Line Article...
This is an article about my brother
Hank.
I just wanted you to read what his
friends have to say about him.
Fondly, Kathy
So much so that Monday's
20th annual Memorial Day 5K race in Green Cove Springs is being dedicated to
Zambie, a former Navy aviator and Orange Park resident who loved Corvettes and
Harley-Davidsons.
The dedication is the first
of its kind in the 26-year history of the Clay County-based club.
"He was just an
all-around, really good guy," fourth-year race organizer Lillian
Lawless said. "He always knew intuitively when to show up and help out
without ever being asked.
"He was really
something else. He was always there when I needed him."
Zambie was a recreational
runner, which fit in well with the Striders' philosophy of running more for
health than trophies.
To him, finishing times
were far less important than the amount of time spent helping others.
About 10 family members,
including Zambie's widow, Nancy, are expected to take part in dedication
ceremonies for the man whose passion and infectious smile was enough to
encourage others to run for their health.
As a longtime Striders
member, he helped the club increase its membership to more than 400 runners.
As a retired United
Airlines pilot, he spent lots of time driving Corvettes and motorcycles --
right up to the end.
"He was diagnosed
[with cancer] over three years ago," Lawless said. "He actually beat
the odds. Luckily he did very well at first, but the cancer returned with a
vengeance.
"But he had three more
years than he was supposed to," she said. "His mission was to get
better, and he did. He was that kind of guy."
Lawless and her husband, Frank
Sutman, expect nearly 500 runners to take part in Monday's 5K, which starts
at 8 a.m. on Magnolia Avenue in Green Cove Springs. A free, 1-mile fun run is
set for 9 a.m., and should draw at least 80 runners, Sutman said.
Registration for the 5K is
$20. For more information, log on to www.floridastriders.com.

Pat, I don't know if you received the sad news about my dear brother. Mom and I were there for the final 2 weeks of his life at his home. He slipped away very peacefully after a very courageous battle with cancer. He simply ran out of treatment options.

Sue Gilbrech
Thanks so much to all
who made the webb pages possible. About four years
ago all my pictures burned so I have really enjoyed getting some pictures to
help my memory. My name is Sue Gilbrech and I was at SHA for 7 years as a
boarder from 1946 until I graduated in 1953. How many of you remember
Sister Claricena (I don't know how to spell it) and her ruler? She
brought
me from the bottom of the class in 7th grade to the top in the 8th grade.
Getting the highest grade and award that last report card was one of the
highlights of my many years there. I went through college on the sound
foundation she gave me in those two short years.
Thanks again, everyone.

My husband and I would like to thank you and your
committee for a job
well done. The work that went into the planning of the three day event
was much appreciated, the results were outstanding and you all deserve
a standing ovation. It was the first Sacred Heart Academy Reunion that
we have ever attended. God willing it won't be our last.
Winning a copy of the painting done by Ike, of the Sacred
Heart
Academy School was very special to me, and I must confess that I
had
tears in my eyes when it was given to me, for traveling the longest
distance. Ike and Lena were close friends when I lived in Helena,
and
we enjoyed many good times together.
Thanks again, and please keep us on the list for the next reunion.

What a great turn-out
at the 2003 SHA Reunion! Many thanks to those who
worked so hard to make it a success. All I had to do was "show
up". I hope
the future reunions only get better. As Joyce Donnelly put it ---
"We are
FAMILY!"
August 13, 2003
To All of the
Members of the SHA Reunion:
What a wonderful visit we all had! The food, hospitality, warmth & especially the hard work of each of you is greatly appreciated. Those of you who missed it-must join us at the next reunion.
It was so grand to spend time with each of you and your families; It was even better that both my brothers (Pat & Patty Donnelly and Ed Donnelly & Terry ) could join me in the memories!
What a special treat to be able to visit with the Sisters from SCN; Sister Louis Joseph was such a special part of the memories of SHA. Sister Anne Rita is most spirited. Who would think that they could be with us this year! They remain in our prayers of thanksgiving for the many gifts of Love, Knowledge and Family.
Please pray for all those who have gone before us, Parents, Nuns, Friends and all who could not be with us to Remember what a blessing we received as students of SHA!
Again thank you to each of you who made this Reunion such a special occasion.
With love to each of you,

We are sad to report
the passing of my uncle, Bill Cushman, on Monday, June
3, 2002, in San Diego, CA. He was a member of Sacred Heart Academy's
Class
of 1936. He is survived by his wife Esther and daughters, Connie and
Janis
of Arlington, Texas. Bill was an avid hunter and fisherman. For
many years
he came to Helena to hunt and visit his sisters, Betty Schaffhauser, Gertrude
Kummer and the late Josephine Kelly. Bill was a staunch supporter of
Sacred
Heart Academy and penned his remembrances in a letter that was shared at
the 1999 reunion and later posted on the St. Mary's web page. Memorial
services will be held in San Diego. Bill will be buried in Helena.

I read Jim East's comments in the Helena Daily World and we have corresponded by email twice the last few days. Today he made me aware of the SHA web page and I haven't been able to get away from my computer since. Reading the names has brought back so many good memories. I have been in contact with Jim East and George Petkoff who were my age. Attended SHA my first seven years of school (1941-1948). My wife, Minerva, thought that my first seven grades were from 1941 to 1951 but I told her that I was the Valedictorian of the first grade. It was either me or Baker Bush. Long enough that it had a lasting effect on me. Between my parents and the nuns my early training in morals and manners was instilled in me and has stayed with me throughout my life. Thanks again for your thoughtfulness and work on the web site.

We left Helena for the second time two years ago, and I now teach
school in North Little Rock. I attended Sacred Heart from kindergarten
through the 7th grade and was May queen o in the 1st. grade. I was
crowned
sideways by a girl named Ann Kelly who became my best friend. I sure hope
to see Ann, Mike, Mary and Alice at the reunion. We had some good
times. I
am e-mailing Martha Merrified also that I am coming this time. My best
memories are from Sacred Heart.
Public school was not the same. I still relate stories to my kids now,
especially about the desk checks, sitting with your hands folded and feet
flat on the floor, which by the way was hard for me to do, and still is.
I
am looking forward to seeing everyone.

As I was looking up the graduation
pictures of my three sisters
(Roseann, Clarene & Celeste) and brother (David), I became
saddened by the
fact that my graduation picture is not here. I attended SHA from
Kindergarden through 11th grade and in the summer of '61, the year I became
a senior, SHA announced the closing of its high school. What a tremendous
disappointment to all of us who would have graduated the following year; a
disappointment that left
scars which never healed.
I am a graduate of SHA in my heart and in my spirit. Most of my class
members even kept the SHA ring and wore it proudly the following year at
Central.

IF YA'LL WILL REMEMBER, MY SISTERS, JANICE ZAMBIE VAUGHN, JACKIE ZAMBIE

9TH, DIFFERENT YEARS, OF COURSE. THAT IS WHY I USE THE MRSK389. WHICH
STANDS FOR 3 SISTERS BORN ON AUGUST 9TH. I AM SO PROUD OF THE FACT THAT WE
CAN SHARE SOMETHING SO UNIQUE.
LOOKING BACK AT SOME OF THE PICTURES OF THE VARIOUS GRADUATING CLASSES,
MAKES ME FEEL OLD. WE ALL LOOKED SO YOUNG!!!!!!!! THEY SAY THAT TIME FLIES
WHEN YOU ARE HAVING FUN, BUT I NEVER REALIZED THAT I HAVE HAD ENOUGH FUN TO
COMPENSATE FOR ALL THOSE YEARS. I STILL REMEMBER A LOT OF THINGS AS IF THEY
HAPPENED RECENTLY. HARD TO BELIEVE I EVER LOOKED SO YOUNG, AND SOOOOO THIN.
IT WAS GREAT LOOKING BACK, AND SO SAD TO THINK THAT SHA IS NO LONGER
PHYSICALLY THERE. THE FIRST TIME I WENT BACK TO HELENA AFTER IT WAS GONE, I
HAD TO PULL OVER AND PARK. TEARS WERE FLOWING SO RAPIDLY, I COULDN'T DRIVE
SAFELY. I STILL GET TEARY EYED THINKING ABOUT IT.
ENOUGH FOR NOW. IF ANYONE WANTS TO WRITE, I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU.

Message = Hello all! I have said many times how thankful I am that I had
the privilege of attending SHA from K-7 grades. The skills I acquired there
have served me well in various occupations as copywriter, ad manager and
publicity writer in both profit and non-profit organizations. I loved the
plays and processions and have fond memories of overcoming stage fright to
perform. I remember Annette Alpe, the Costello girls, and so many others.
The nuns were always keeping me in "detention study hall" for talking
too
much. I remember our spring "contests" and still have some of the
ribbons
our teams won. I recall Deanne DiMaggio with the beautiful red hair. My
older sister (Mary Norma Overton) has written a delightful "memories"

Dear Pat and probably Don:
Just found out about the web page for SHA/St.Mary's. While I haven't had
time to explore and read fully, I can truly say it almost brought tears to
my eyes just rushing through. Can hardly wait to go through it piece by
piece.
In the Guest Book there is a question mark after my address (guess it means:
What is my ZIP. and the answer is 72315 same as Blytheville, AR as we are
just three miles north, across the highway from the formerly Eaker Air Force
Base, now called Arkansas Aeroplex (Rick works here)
Area code to replace ? on phone # is 870.
My work email is at the top of this, however, it will only be good for a few
more months. My lovely plant, Borg-Warner Automotive, is moving its
operations to our Water Vally, MS plant. We should all be out of here by
the end of August. Boo Hoo.
My home email is rickjohnson@arkansas.net
And, if I don't get back to work, I'll be out of here sooner than I want.

He attended Sacred Heart grades 1--12 finishing in 1944. He is in the
process of writing his memoirs including many experiences at SHA. We will
share them with you later!
Dear Pat, Peace!
I just recently discovered the St. Mary's & SHA web site. I enjoyed it (and am still enjoying it)---brings back many fond memories. Congratulations on a job well done.
In reference to the picture of the football team of '40, the person second from the left in the front row is Joe Madonia--No. 24
In the class picture of '37, "1F" is Rose Rita Coco,(Sr. Rita Maria, SCN) and I'm almost sure that 1B is Frank Coco(Fr. Frank Coco, S.J.) I'm going to send this picture to Frank for him to confirm this and ask him to identify as many of the others that he can and send the information on to you.
As a suggestion, you may want to contact my two sisters, Sarah Coco & Mary Saia in Helena. I'm sure that they will be able to help you identify many of the people in the various class pictures. Mary has a computer and Sarah lives next door, so it will be easy to get the two of them together. I'll tell them that you might be contacting them. I'm sure that they will be glad to help to identify the people in the pictures.
You may remember me---I'm the youngest in Coco family. The one who worked as an auto mechanic and for several years at West-Hornor. I would have been in the class picture of '47 except for the fact that I did my last year of high school in Memphis with the Christian Brothers.
I entered the Jesuit Order in '57 as a Brother and have been at our mission in Brazil since '66.
Sincerely,
(Bro.) Anthony Cocoa, S.J.

Just heard about the web site; so happy. Would like to hear from anyone.
Just got a Christmas card from Randy Tardy telling me of the web site.
I sat right down and went to it. Thank you. Brought tears to my eyes.
I graduated in 1950. Was there for the last Reunion. Loved it. I will
keep watch on "our" site.

Ever since the Sacred Heart reunion I have done nothing but
reminisce. Apparently there were people in attendance that I did not
recognize. How could that be? See everyone in 01.

Pat, I came across the graduation announcement for the class of '48 recently.
I had it in my hands. I put it somewhere. I don't remember where
"somewhere" is. I know it's around and will show up if I persist in
looking for it. When I find it again, I will scan it and send you a copy. There
used to be a bunch of snapshots on the wall at the old Nick's cafe, and I was
told that they were saved after the fire. I don't know who has possession of
them now. One or more were snapshots that I took at "48 graduation party.
As far as I know there were never any formal graduation class photos. I
actually was in the class of '46, but didn't get my diploma until '48 since I
was short 2 credits. I made up the deficit through my Navy technical school and
graduated with the class of '48.
I will get any records I have to you as soon as I can put my fingers on them.

Sacred Heart may be closed, the buildings may be gone, the campus
otherwise occupied but, Sacred Heart still exists. It lives as surely as
those who attend it and loved it still live and it will live as long as they
do.

I'm so happy that SHA has a Web site. Jim Monday Class of 5 l informed of
this. You might like to know that I also graduated from SHA C/O 5 l.
Although I did not know it then those were the best days of my life. I
attended the reunion in August and enjoyed it very much.
I have resided in Huntsville, Alabama since 1958. I had a long career with
NASA and later for a shorter period I worked for a couple of electronic
companies engaged in the space program and various commercial endeavors.
I will keep in touch.
